2. Measure your working distance

Working distance = corner of your eye → the patient's mouth, in inches.
  1. 1Sit at the chair in your normal working posture, patient reclined as usual.
  2. 2Look at the spot you work in most often — the patient's mouth.
  3. 3Have someone measure from the outer corner of your eye to that spot.
  4. 4Round to the nearest half inch. Most clinicians land between 13 and 20 inches.
